Abstract

The impact of sargassum on the tourism industry in San Andrés has been a major challenge in recent years. This marine macroalgae has proliferated on the Caribbean coasts, seriously affecting the natural beauty of the beaches and generating concern among visitors. The island, which relies heavily on tourism as its main source of income, has experienced a decline in tourist demand due to excess sargassum and the problems it causes. The article proposes to examine how the presence of sargassum has affected the tourist industry of San Andrés Island. The methodology used was the documentary review, in order to obtain relevant and updated information from various documentary sources. The results propose the implementation of measures to combat the problem, such as the cleaning of beaches and the installation of floating barriers, to reduce the problem in an effective and sustainable way, through a comprehensive strategy that involves cooperation between different actors, such as the government, environmental organizations and the local community. Scientific research is suggested to better understand and address the causes and patterns of Sargassum proliferation. Scientific research is suggested to better understand and address the causes and patterns of Sargassum proliferation. Promote tourism alternatives that do not depend exclusively on the beaches, to diversify the offer and reduce dependence on coastal tourism, so that, with coordinated efforts and appropriate approaches, it is expected to mitigate the impact of sargassum on the tourism industry on the island of San Andrés and preserve its attractiveness as a tourist destination
