Abstract
Production management has evolved with digitalization, sustainability, and automation, transforming global production systems. Understanding these trends is key to improving industrial efficiency and competitiveness. The main objective of this research is to review the main trends, challenges, and opportunities in production management and to examine how these developments can guide the redesign of academic programs in industrial engineering to align them with the needs of the sector. Methodologically, a bibliometric and literary analysis was carried out using SCOPUS as a database, where 149 scientific publications selected from an initial population of 1423 documents belonging to the production management line were analyzed. The results show the growth of digitalization, artificial intelligence, and automation in process optimization. They also highlight challenges in technological integration, sustainability, and production flexibility, along with opportunities in smart manufacturing and energy efficiency. The research concludes that automation and digital transformation will be key in the production of the future. It is recommended to update academic programs in industrial engineering to develop competences aligned with the sector's demand.
