Industrial Ecology: A symbiosis between the green ceramic and soft coffee industries
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study investigates the integration between the red ceramic and soluble coffee industrial sectors in Brazil, examining the technical and economic aspects involved in using coffee grounds as an input for brick manufacturing. Based in the principles of industrial ecology and the circular economy, the study demonstrates how this symbiosis promotes energy efficiency, waste reduction, and improvements in the quality of ceramic products. It also assesses the capacity of ceramic hubs in the country to absorb such waste, generating economic and energy gains, along with other advantages for their manufacturing processes, as well as the equivalent area of possible avoided deforestation, in the case that part of the firewood used in ceramics comes from illegal sources.
