Abstract

Objective: The objective of this article was the analysis of the performance of the Boston Nnaming Test (BNT) in a population of adults over 59 years of age who attended neuropsychological consultation for cognitive complaints, in the upper valley of Río Negro, Argentina. Method: An analysis of Medical Records (MC; n=270) that included the BNT of 60 slides was carried out. 128 MC from the population aged 60-69 years and 142 aged 70 or older were included; 167 were women. The population was also discriminated against due to low educational level (≥ 7 years of education); medium level (8-12 years) and high level (>12 years). Results: the BNT results for this population presented one standard deviation below the norm in accordance with age and education. The least named plates were, from smallest to largest: Acorn, Yoke, Beaver, Sphinx, Pelican, Stethoscope and Tripod. These 7 sheets
presented a percentage of correct answers of less than 20% for the population with a lower educational level. Except for Acorn and Yoke, the other 5 cards had a response level that increased with a higher educational level. No significant differences in response were observed by gender. This work shows that this population suffers from the same problems in recognizing stimulus cards as the typical population. Conclusions: In the population over 59 years of age that comes to consultation for cognitive complaints, as the educational level decreases, patients present lower percentages of correctness in the BNT. Five stimulus cards were detected
whose percentage of failures is very high in the low-educated population (Tripod, Stethoscope, Pelican, Sphinx and Beaver) and two whose percentage of failures is cultural and not educational (Yoke and Acorn). The replacement of some of these stimulus cards could substantially improve the contribution to the detection of anomia.
