Main Article Content
Abstract
The onset and course of chronic disease in a child fully af-fects the entire family system. Parents who are main care-givers of their children suffer psychological problems very often, and also their family functioning features seem to be fundamental in the adaptive response to illness of both patient and family caregiver. This study aims to identify the levels of stress related to coping with a chronic illness and emotional distress in main family caregivers and the influence of parental and family functioning features in these psychological problems. Our sample comes from 23 family caregivers of pediatric patients with diabetes mellitus type 1. Our results suggest significant levels of emotional distress and stress related to coping with a chronic illness on these caregivers and a relevant influ-ence of family type and level of family adaptation on these psychological problems.
