Abstract

Introduction: The didactic integration of tablets in higher education contributes to innovate in student training and strengthen their skills profile, even though, its implementation brings challenges associated with the development of skills in students and teachers. The objective was to analyze the challenges and opportunities of the didactic inte- gration of tablets in higher education from the students’ perception. Methodology: A multidimensional descriptive comparative study with students from Medellin, Colombia, was carried out. Data were processed by factor analysis, frequency distribution and contrast of means by sex (Z method). The statistical package SAS University and Factor 9.3.1 were used. Results: Students integrate tablets to build their learning, without significant differences between men and women, it is evident that they have skills for their academic use. Likewise, students with better socioeconomic status, in correspondence with the stratum to which they belong, show a greater appropriation in the use of these devices with respect to the rest of the group (p < 0.05). Regarding their perceptions, they consider them useful for learning. They state that they have not received training and state that their teachers should strengthen technological competencies. Conclusions: The relevance of technological mediation for didactic strengthening; importance of student perception for curricular decision making and gender equity in the appropriation of these devices, are revealed as opportunities. On the other hand, the main challenges are associated with the need to strengthen competencies and the provision of insti- tutional support.
