The importance of executive functions for the development of citizenship skills in the educational context
Main Article Content
Abstract
Education is in permanent evolution since it constantly considers the needs of a changing world. With the increase in interest of neuroscience and its importance regarding the understanding of the way in which cognitive skills develop, especially executive functions in an individual, a new form to study the relationship between teaching and learning processes in the classroom from the perspective of Psychology has emerged. Executive functions can be defined, according to Portellano (2009), as a set of higher-level cognitive abilities that allow adapting to a social milieu. Hence, the aim is not only the development of academic knowledge but the development of citizenship skills in order to help individuals to adapt to a society in which decision making is orientated towards achieving a common weal. For information gathering of bibliography and documents, data-bases and specialized web pages were used to analyze scientific texts, literature reviews, and concept maps.
