A study of personality dimensions in high-performance athletes
Main Article Content
Abstract
Sport psychology is considered today as an important field for psychology application. This paper is the result of a research which aimed to know about personality traits of Santa Marta’s (Colombia) elite athletes. Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ-A) was applied to a sample of 76 athletes. Results show that athletes of all the studied disciplines had high scores in the extraversion dimension. A detailed analysis of results set out differences of this dimension among the sport disciplines that were studied, thus, for weightlifting athletes it was an 87%, taekwondo showed a 75%, and for athletics it was an 89%; whereas for soccer a 66% was obtained, skating a 57%, and basketball a 64%, showing less meaningful scores in this dimension for the latter categories.
