Public space as a right: accessibility for people with disabilities in the in the town centre of Cúcuta

Abstract
All citizens regardless of their economic, social or physical condition must enjoy the same conditions, opportunities for use and enjoyment of public space; free from any restriction or discrimination that has the purpose of impeding their inclusion in the urban landscape. Therefore, people with disabilities, as actors within it, must actively participate in decisions that affect their configuration, arrangement and projection. Based on the personal view of those who face public space in the central area of the Colombian city of Cúcuta from their disability status, the present study developed in 2018 consolidates the perception analysis in terms of accessibility to the urban environment of the individuals with the most representative types of alteration in the city. To this end, the research made use of a qualitative methodology: Avalanche sampling and tools such as participant observation and interview, which allowed to consolidate of a baseline of public space indicators for the population with limitations, as an instrument for measuring the quality of life in cities and an enriching element in the formulation of public policies in matters of public space.
