Relation Between Physical and Emotional Abuse and Cognitive Functioning in Children Aged 6 to 10
Main Article Content
Abstract
This paper sets out the main findings derived from research seeking to discover connections between physical and emotional maltreatment and cognitive functioning. A descriptive and exploratory quasi-experimental study was performed with comparing groups: two groups of 20 children each, abused and nonmaltreated, ranging from 6 to 10 years old to whom a maltreatment identification instrument de-signed for this research (MEF) and a pediatric neuropsychological test battery were applied to. Results illustrate that not all cognitive functioning is affect-ed in maltreatment cases, since the best performance items of one group in contrast to the other were verbal and auditory codification and visual perception.
